O'Hart Brewery - George Val. Hart, Brewer
About the Brewery
O'Hart Brewing was founded in 1992 by George V. Hart who is, by heritage, German on his father's side, coming from a family of brewers from the Black Forest region of Germany. His maternal family, however, has its roots in Ireland and it is this heritage that gives O'Hart Brewing its drive to create refreshing imbibables, for with brewers on one side of the family and drinkers on the other, it was inevitable, perhaps even Destiny, that George would have his hands in the craft to some degree.
For too many years, George knew nothing of beer other than commercial brews that he continually complained about (for lack of any real interesting characteristics, like flavor). Like a man lost in the desert, George crawled from bar to bar, never having anything more interesting than a traditional Irish Stout (you know the one), yet ever seeking, yearning for something to relieve his thirst for something that his taste buds could really wrap themselves around. So when he tried his first microbrew (Harpoon) after moving to the Boston area in 1986, George saw a small beacon of hope shining through the darkness. Boston, George soon discovered, was a Mecca for microbrews and distributors and, soon, he had sampled (and since long forgotten) every one he could get his hands on, whether local, imported, domestic or otherwise.
Enjoying this exploration for a while, a friendship was later made with a gentleman who was just learning to homebrew. This friend's very first batch was almost ready to be sampled; an Amber Ale of some type or another. When the fateful night finally came, bottle caps were snapped off, frosted glasses were poured into, dark amber frothy goodness was held to the light, smelled and, finally, tasted. The clouds parted and the sun shone down upon the Earth in all its Heavenly Glory...which George missed because it was after 10:30 at night in Boston, so it had happened elsewhere on the planet...and in that moment, he knew that his search was over, and that a new quest had just begun.
Charlie Papazian became his Messiah, *The Complete Joy of Homebrewing* his Bible and after a few years' flurry of creativity, driving himself crazy making some pretty darn good brews AND one or two exceptionally bad ones, George nestled in to a comfortable routine of brewing simply for his own enjoyment and for that of family and friends. O'Hart Brewing even crafted all the Ale and Sparkling Mead for his own wedding.
Cut to the present: In the Summer of 2007, O'Hart Brewing was introduced to some of the members of Stoney Creek Homebrewers Club and was invited to become a member. O'Hart is now looking forward to sharing and learning more about the craft of brewing and what it takes to brew for competitions, but most of all, to an expanded world of hombrews to enjoy and like-minded people to enjoy them with.
